The role of the maintenance planner is to improve workforce productivity and work quality by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through planning and coordination of manpower, parts and materials, and equipment access.
Planners are responsible for planning, scheduling and coordination for all plannable maintenance work performed on the worksite. He/she is also responsible for maintenance records and files essential to meaningful analysis and reporting of maintenance related matter.
- Is the principal contact and liaison between maintenance and production. Ensures that all internal customers receive timely, efficient and quality service, while helping to balance productions need for output with their need for equipment reliability.
- Responsible for month to month planning as well as week to week, by regular analysis of maintenance backlog to available resources. Must balance the two variables to obtain and maintain a proactive maintenance environment.
- The planner must be able to describe a job in terms of how it is to be performed and what repairs will be required to do the job. The planning function consists of what, where, how and when work will be performed and scheduling the resources required to meet the expectation.
- The planner must be able to maintain computerized records, systems and files as required to perform maintenance analysis and provide reports as requested.
- Needs to balance customer needs with plant needs.
- Requires disciplined approach to managing systems and work.
- Plant conditions and improve use of labor as measured by a reduction of emergency repairs.
- Required job completion dates as specifically requested by final priority.
- Improve mean time between equipment failures.
- Maintenance of backlogs within specified control limits.
- Timely, meaningful and accurate control reports.
The Work Itself
- Know internal company and facility policies.
- Know departmental process flow, equipment and product quality.
- Know and perform administrative processes.
- Basic computer knowledge (CWorks, MSWord, Excel, Power Point, MS Outlook).
- Daily review maintenance time sheets and compare completed work orders and PM's to time sheets, making sure numbers and time match. Any work orders and PM's that weren't completed will have to be re-scheduled.
- Review work orders for any parts that need ordering.
- Review completed PM's and make sure that appropriate work orders were written.
- Write any work orders as needed.
- Plan and schedule maintenance work orders and PM's daily in order of highest priority. Any safety work order that proposes an immediate safety hazard receives priority.
- Make sure that parts are in stock for any scheduled work.
- Get part numbers for non-stock items and create purchase requisitions for these. When parts are received this work can then be scheduled.
- Update BOM list bi-weekly.
- Track problem areas in the mill by reviewing function locations that have repetitive work orders.
- Track cylinder, electric motor and pump failures. Do not close out work orders on these items until they are repaired or replaced.
- Interaction w/vendors by schedule outside contractors for maintenance or repair services as needed.
- Attend and participate in safety meetings.
- Daily communicate with Maintenance Supervisor about maintenance issues and any repetitive problems.
- Review all downtime reports daily and participate in RCFA team activities to identify and implement solutions to failures.
- Interface with Predictive Maintenance Technicians daily to ensure that all equipment condition monitoring data indicating potential problems is incorporated into planned maintenance and failures are prevented.
- Track problem areas in the mill by reviewing function locations that have repetitive work orders written on them.
- Responsible as Maintenance Clerk backup as needed. This includes completing PM's and work orders, printing PM's, completing maintenance time and payroll.
- Learn to print safety work order reports, PM reports, and failure and cost reports.
- Help refine PM's as needed.

- Minimum of 1 year of Maintenance experience in a heavy industrial environment
- CMMS experience
- Experience in a Maintenance role
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Microsoft Office experience
- 2 or more years of Maintenance Planner experience where you have been responsible for planning daily maintenance and scheduled outages
- 10 years as a millwright
- Strong analytical skills
- Good written and verbal communications skill with the ability to communicate across the different levels of the mill
- Experience in the wood products industry
